The Second Battle of Senonchamps -- A 20mm WWII Wargame

Fought on Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Kampfgruppe Kunkel, comprised of two infantry battalions supported by a panzerjaeger battalion, prepared to attack the US-held village of Senonchamps for the second time in two days. Team Browne, an armored field artillery battalion reinforced with various small tank, armored infantry, and AA units, grimly preparted for the expected assault. The price of failure was the loss of the village, and the tightening of the German noose around the town of Bastogne, to the east. The result of our wargame was a US victory at a high cost in lives and equipment. All miniatures in these photos are 20mm (1/72 and 1/76) scale. The rules used were Hail of Lead.

Our thanks to Frank Chadwick , designer of this scenario. The Second Battle of Senonchamps can be found in his excellent module entitled Bastogne, created for his Command Decision miniatures rules.

German dummy units move up from the south. The US players were not fooled, and dummies met dummies.

Just south of Senonchamps, the AAA battery breaks cover and comes under a hail of small arms and AT fire. M16 and M15 MGMCs make up the unit.

1st Company, 26th Panzerjäger Battalion is deployed with its PAK 40s supporting the attack. It's first targets are the halftracks of the US AAA battery.

Assault guns of 2nd Company, 26th Panzerjäger Battalion also open up on the AAA halftracks. Note the towed guns, above, have been hit by US artillery.

What's left of the AAA battery. One M15 MGMC and it commander will fall back into the woods.

The towed AT company is hit by more US artillery, and the 155mm shells tear into the soft transport.

IMG_6293
German fusiliers, supported by StuGs at top, slog slowly across open ground to the woods south of Senonchamps.

US artillery drops an extensive smoke screen to the west of Senonchamps to cover US movements.

Infantry of the 26th Fusilier/Recon Battalion advance past a wiped out enemy recon jeep.

As the smoke screen lifts, an AA unit, a recon infantry company, and a combined armor-infantry force make a push for the town.

IMG_6305
The US defenders open fire and trade hits with the Germans.

IMG_6308
The StuGs are hit hard by combined fire from Sherman tanks and the M7 HMC Priest. All the armor available to the Germans is snuffed out instantly.

IMG_6309
A company of Fusiliers moves in to finish off the remaining M15 MGMC, but receives a deadly blast of fire from its automatic weapons.

IMG_6311
26th Panzerjäger Battalion's HQ moves out toward Senonchamps. The Germans are sending up anyone who can contribute to the fight.

IMG_6314
A depleted company of Fusiliers is blasted by the last surviving US vehicle, a Sherman. A combination of heavy German MG, mortar, and PAK 40 fire virtually wiped out the defenders.

IMG_6316
But reinforcements are on the way. An FO Sherman (part of 420th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, aka Team Browne) moves up with a M7 HMC Priest battery.

A good time was had by all. The proud owner of the StuG IV had the pleasure of knocking it out in its debut battle!
