The French loss at the Battle of Leipzig forced Napoleon to abandon his Danish allies as he evacuated his army from Germany. At the village of Sehested, the Danish army 's line of retreat south towards the fortress of Rendsburg was intercepted by an Allied (mostly German-Russian) force under General Walmoden. Danish Prince Frederick resolved to open the road at Sehested, and did so with a grinding infantry attack into the town. The battle began at 10 am and lasted all day, with the Danish ultimately clearing the road to Rendsburg. Danish losses were perhaps 300 killed and wounded, whereas the Allied force lost upwards of 1100 killed, wounded, and captured.

This tiny wargaming universe fits neatly into a living room. If only the present-day inhabitants of Sehestadt (modern German spelling) could see it now!

IMG_6925.JPG
Nimble Danish light cavalry manuvers to take Sehested from the rear.

IMG_6930.JPG
The first Danish assault has been driven off with casualties, and the Allies have installed a pesky artillery battery behind a stream.

More Danish units move up in reserve. Heavy cavalry occupy the foreground in this photo.

IMG_6941.JPG
Danish artillery drives off the single Allied battery, and an uneasy lull develops in front of the town. Sehested is now home to more Allied troops and cannon.

Cavalry clash in and around the canal south of Sehested. The melee turns out to be inconclusive.

Now the gourmet part of the action begins in earnest. The delicious green salad is not pictured; please forgive the omission.

IMG_6950.JPG
The cuisine of Richmond is found not to be lacking. Note here the plump sausages served with buns, mustard, and sauerkraut--all in tribute to the German troops.

After lunch, an Allied light cavalry brigade entering from the west is intercepted by Danish heavy cavalry.

IMG_6955.JPG
Danish infantry of the second division in line is still moving to the front. One brigade deploys to face the enemy light cavalry, then thinks better of it and moves forward.

IMG_6959.JPG
Cavalry clash to the west. The Allied light cavalry will be driven back for most of the game.

A renewed Danish assault on Sehested, supported by a myriad of available artillery batteries.

A cavalry-only encounter is brewing on the Danish side of the canal, just to the west of Sehested.

More Allied troops move up towards the village.

Crash! Danish horse will send Allied regulars back across the canal, but will find their mounts winded.

The second Danish assault on the village fails! Allied infantry fall back into Sehested to avoid the biting artillery.

An overview of the game as more Danish infantry (two brigades) maneuver to deliver yet another assault. The cavalry of both sides is recovering.

Curses and screaming horses punctuate the afternoon as the Allied cavalry hits the newly-arrived Danish heavies.

The Danish attack in front of Sehested seems to be at least holding ground. Soon, some red-uniformed infantry will be inside the village.

A typical Danish warrior, just before the blood lust comes. Many Danes were rumored to be cannibals, and all certainly enjoy a cold beer.

IMG_6996.JPG
GAH! That's done it, he's berserk! Hide your beers! Don't let him swallow his dice!

IMG_6997.JPG
Danish infantry pushes into Sehested, but the plucky Allies are not phased.

Danish heavy cavalry hammers the enemy across the canal. A very successful charge, but it set into motion a chain of devastating events.

An Allied conscript cavalry brigade sees its chance to take the enemy in flank.

The Danes desparately try to keep their small foothold in Sehestad as enemy infantry slam home.

The Danish heavies are hit in flank by enemy cavalry, and walloped by accurate fire from the British infantry brigade nearby.

The Danish right flank shudders as the heavy cavalry is swept aside with heavy loss. The writing is on the wall.

Yet again the Danes are driven out of Sehested with few casualties inflicted on the Allies. The game is declared an Allied victory!
