The Battle of Juniville and Perthes - A 20mm WWII Wargame

Fought on Saturday, August 11, 2007

Our refight in Miniature:

The Gourmet Wargaming Club (GWC) fought this battle from 10 am to 5 pm, with a break for a tasty lunch of cheeseburgers from one of the best burger places in the SF Bay Area: The Red Onion in El Cerrito. (More sould food than gourmet, but who's quibbling?) We used the homebrew Hail of Lead ruleset with 20mm miniatures.

See the text below the photos to follow the progress of the battle. The French scored a victory because 1st Panzer Division was severly damaged in the game. But it should be noted that the German forces engaged in the historical battle might have been greater than those allowed in the game. Regardless, we had a good time.

The historical battle was fought on June 10th, 1940, with the French losing 30 tanks and having 15 more damaged. The Germans lost upwards of 100 vehicles, including approximately 3 dozen armored vehicles. 1st Panzer was temporarily slowed.

Elements of 1st Panzer Division: 2nd Panzer Regiment deployed on both forks of the road, a motorized infantry battalion between them, and 4th Reconnaissance Battalion at bottom.

Perthes sector: Groupement Maître is on the move. French char B1 bis move forward in support of Mechanized Chasseurs in trucks instead of Lorraine APC's.

IMG_7253
Perthes sector: A French Mechanized Chasseur Battalion in trucks, supported by char H39's, dismounts for its attack on Perthes.

IMG_7248
Perthes sector: As French units move into sight, a German 88mm flak gun is driven into position--only to be hit by a hail of French tank fire.

IMG_7254
Perthes sector: German infantry and supporting units from 21st Infantry Division move to face the French onslaught.

IMG_7256
Perthes sector: A view of a towed 105mm howitzer battery, plus a company of towed 37mm antitank guns deployed in Perthes.

IMG_7259
Perthes sector: A ragged company of French infantry still holds out in the rubble of Perthes. Half of them survived the game.

IMG_7284
Perthes sector: Dismounted Chasseurs are stonked by 105mm artillery. Note homemade "krump" markers denoting the artillery barrage.

IMG_7287
Perthes sector: The char H39's take losses from German antitank rifles (from the flank) as they close on the town.

IMG_7298
Perthes sector: The formidable char B1 bis unit begins to pelt German infanty with 75mm howitzer fire.

IMG_7301
Perthes sector: Still the Mechanized Chasseurs plod forward, hit again and again by enemy artillery barrages.

IMG_7321
Perthes sector: The grim job of wargaming goes on. Just look at the stress showing on their faces. Any serious disagreements can be settled with the baseball bat beside the bookcase. ;-)

IMG_7328
Perthes sector: A char B1 bis is blasted by direct fire from a 105mm howitzer on the other side of the town. This was how the Germans learned to deal with this tank in 1940.

IMG_7331
Perthes sector: Remnants of a German infantry company attempts to knock out another char H39--but without success.

IMG_7336
Perthes sector: French forces crash into what's left of the German left flank and prepare to assault Perthes proper.

IMG_7345
Perthes sector: Char H39's begin to machinegun any German infantry who show their heads. French infantry still hold out in Perthes.

IMG_7347
Perthes sector: A duel between towed 37mm guns and the HQ of the Mechanized Chasseurs. The command is wiped out, but the Panhard 178 armored car blazes away.

IMG_7348
Perthes sector: The towed 105mm howitzer battery that knocked out one char B1 bis. This was an ace in the hole for the Germans, but it was exposed to enemy fire.

IMG_7355
Perthes sector: As German artillery pulverizes the remnants of the HQ, fighting in Perthes continues.

IMG_7356
Perthes sector: The lone surviving char B1 bis of Groupement Maître grinds forward.

IMG_7261
Juniville sector: I Panzer Battalion strikes out left through Pommery Farm to engage the French.

IMG_7262
Juniville sector: Panzer IV D's successfully drive off a company of French infantry holding the front of Juniville.

IMG_7264
Juniville sector: Elements of II Panzer Battalion move to attack. An armored car squadron and support company wisely hold back behind a rise.

IMG_7266
Juniville sector: 4th Reconnaissance Battalion's HQ unit includes a useful FAC radio truck for directing Stuka air attacks.

IMG_7268
Juniville sector: Armored cars of the Reconnaissance Battalion wait until the French tanks are busy before making a move.

IMG_7270
Juniville sector: Groupement Salanié attacks from the French right flank, its char B1 bis company in full regalia.

IMG_7273
Juniville sector: Dismounted Dragoons of Groupment Salanié are supported by char H39's.

IMG_7275
Juniville sector: The town of Juniville, garrisoned by a full French infantry battalion in entrenchments. Note the 25mm antitank gun abandoned temporarily at top right.

IMG_7279
Juniville sector: Groupement Aussenac's char R35's slowly move to cover the left flank of Juniville.

IMG_7280
Juniville sector: The towed Heavy Panzerjäger Company is hit hard by enemy tank fire as it attempts to deploy beside the Retourne River. The 88mm gun is not silenced--yet.

IMG_7282
Juniville sector: A Motorized Infantry Battalion begins its drive towards the front of Juniville.

IMG_7289
Juniville sector: Meanwhile, I Panzer Battalion runs into enemy tank fire as it approaches Groupement Salanié.

IMG_7291
Juniville sector: Groupement Salanié's char B1 bis company comes under 105mm artillery fire. Movement slows as German tanks approach.

IMG_7293
Juniville sector: The front of the town is re-occupied by the defending infantry as 1st Panzer Division elements inch closer.

IMG_7294
Juniville sector: Groupement Aussenac is hit hard by fire from Panzer IV D's of II Panzer Battalion. The char H39 company is destroyed (top right).

IMG_7296
Juniville sector: A flank attack by II Panzer Battalion is met with some antitank fire and artillery fire.

IMG_7303
Juniville sector: The French show their spirit as they maneuver to get flank shots on the mighty Panzer IV's. The puny, short 37mm gun on the char R35's barely does the job.

IMG_7304
Juniville sector: A tank versus tank battle rages as the Germans are continually hit by artillery fire.

IMG_7306
Juniville sector: Meanwhile, the German left flank is attacked by advancing char B1 bis. The Panzer IV's are in danger.

IMG_7308

IMG_7311
Juniville sector: Generals and majors in the midst of battle. They drink beer and shakes, not blood as some might think.

IMG_7315
Juniville sector: "Teenage Rommel" checks his manicure as other German commanders plot the fall of the French Republic.

IMG_7316
Juniville sector: French commanders--and a plucky camp follower--survey the mass of burning wrecks for survivors.

IMG_7318
Juniville sector: Posing for Rodin's "The Thinker" and "The Scratcher," French officers show their affinity for high art culture.

IMG_7323
Juniville sector: German recon vehicles push through a gap in the carnage to close in on the town.

IMG_7325
Juniville sector: A German command tank goes up in flames after trying to force its way into the town in the face of enemy infantry.

IMG_7327
Juniville sector: Char H39's hold the low land in the French right flank, as a German light tank company sneaks through Pommery Farm to stalk them.

IMG_7333
Juniville sector: The French right flank heats up as German tanks break cover from behind a ridge. The light tanks were easy meat for the 37mm guns of the char H39's.

IMG_7335
Juniville sector: The same scene a turn later. The German tank company is destroyed with no loss to the French.

IMG_7339
Juniville sector: In the town, the French felt the pressure. Repeated German tank attacks resulted in loss to both sides.

IMG_7341
Juniville sector: German light armor sweeps around the collapsed French left, passing a line of empty transports.

IMG_7343
Juniville sector: A full-strength German light tank company shoulders past burning wrecks to threaten Juniville.

IMG_7350
Juniville sector: A flight of Ju 87B Stuka dive-bombers finally shows up, and is directed onto a group of French tanks by the FAC radio truck.

IMG_7358
Juniville sector: As the game came to an end, a company of German 37mm antitank guns was manhandled into Pommery Farm. It was mercilessly attached by enemy tanks and infantry below.

Our model, Dieter, demonstrates the krump marker as "a great hair care product for men." Fabelhaft, Dahlinks!
