The Chuzu Army is withdrawing south through the Jade Mountains after a disasterous campaign. Vassal daimyos sense weakness, and form the Three Lightnings Army to destroy the Chuzu forces and throw off their hated overlords. Have a look at the photos, below, to see how it turned out.

The battle was fought by the Gourmet Wargaming Club with 25mm figures, using our Samurai Furi ruleset (based on Fire and Fury and Age of Eagles).

The battlefield, as seen from the north. The Chuzu Army is withdrawing southward along twin roads towards the ford at the Hogetsu River, enshrouded in morning mist. The Three Lightnings Army can be seen approaching on the right.

Elements of the Chuzu Advance Guard are stationed covering the three passes. A fourth pass, the River Road is covered in mist at bottom left. Note the Chuzu cavalry contingent at bottom.

Bito, the messenger in command of the Advance Guard, is seen here with some of his command defending Flat Pass.

Kitsune's force of the Three Lightnings Army maneuvers to attack Jade Pass, the northernmost path across the Jade Mountains.

A line of smoke marks arquebus fire from the defenders of Flat Pass. Daichi's force of Three Lightnings Army is moving to the attack.

Banners of Kisawa's force wave above the mist along the Hogetsu River, to the south. This is the third force of the Three Lightnings Army.

Samurai monks support a unit of the Chuzu Advance Guard. The monks must defend the monastery, and cannot leave Monastery Pass unless they withdraw into the building.

Chuzu elements push aggressively through Flat Pass to give Three Lightnings pause.

Elements of Kikkawa's force of the Chuzu Army scale Jade Pass to support the Advance Guard holding the top.

Hey, who let these war correspondents in here?! Can I see some credentials, sir?

Chuzu cavalry ride in support of Flat Pass.

The Three Lightnings right body approaches Monastery Pass. Half this force is marching through the mist, unseen, along the River Road.

Intense fighting at Flat Pass. Chuzu cavlary, bowmen, and arquebus Ashigaru vent their fury on the attackers.

Now the assault on Jade Pass is coming at full bore.

This wider view of the battle shows the Three Lightnings pushing into Flat Pass (left), firing on Monastery Pass (middle), and attacking along River road (right).

Three Lightings Army is bursting across Jade Pass.

Now that's what I call a mist shrouded peak.

Calculating attack numbers in the heat of battle.

Ninja chef with deadly implement of food preparation makes a subtle move to disarm the photographer. Flee! Run away!

Three Lightnings Army (left) tries to bash its way along River Road towards Hogetsu Ford. If they can beat their way through militia and cavalry in time, they may be able to capture the ford and close the noose on the remaining Chuzu units.

Hogetsu Ford (lower right), enshrouded in mist and guarded by peasants. A long line of retreating Chuzu Army forces under Ashino will soon cross the ford to safety, carrying treasure.

Three Lightnings troops scale Monastery Pass and pepper the defenders with arrows and arquebus shot.

Jade Pass will soon be the springboard for a Three Lighnings attack on Kikkawa's troops, below.

Lunch is under construction: teriyaki gravy in a pan.

Thick, delicious slabs of beef are deftly prodded by our chef.

Three Lightnings Army pushes down River Road. Chuzu Army is making progress very slow.

Three Lightnings forces have taken Flat Pass (top left), but the defenders surround its mouth on the other side. Daichi considers a bold attack from the pass against Kikkawa's troops (right) to support the Three Lightnings attack from Jade Pass.

Kikkawa's forces (left) form a defensive position against the attackers at Jade Pass.

A break for a gourmet lunch: rice, green salad, marinated beef.

Three Lightnings forces under Daichi burst out of Flat Pass, but are immediately counter-attacked by cavalry.

Kitsune's men pour down from Jade Pass to attack the Chuzu rearguard.

Chuzu peasants are successfully constructing a baracade at Hogetsu Ford.

Kisawa's troops push across Monastery Pass to threaten the exposed flank of the retreating Chuzu forces.

Chuzu forces fall back from Flat Pass, and from the advance of the left flank of Three Lightnings Army from Jade Pass. The retreat is getting messy.

The battered remnants of Daichi's command plugs Flat Pass.

Kitsune's infantry and cavalry crash into the retreating Chuzu.

Kisawa is pushing the Chuzu back to the ford. The battle ended with a victory for Three Lightnings Army. Chuzu Army could not have got all its retreating units across the ford before the box snapped shut.

Don't try this at home, young Jedis.

Brimming with sake and beef, our daimyos (and Honored Referee) breathe a little easier now that the last echos of battle have died away in the Jade Mountains. (Insert haiku here.) Watch for the sequel!
