The battlefield of Eylau as hostilities commenced. This view is looking north. Note the two large, square redoubts (upper left and lower left), and the six smaller ones. The town of Eylau is directly in the center. |

Our player--and the white-shirted Umpire--prepare to swing into action. |

A wider view of the war room in Redwood Shores. Sweet skylights. |

The first French division arrives from the northwest. |

French heavy cavalry (bottom right) charge Russian regulars. The latter were driven back, but heavy cavalry waited behind. |

Russian regular cavalry along the west road feel the effects of long-range artillery fire. |

The French division hauls its artillery into position. |

Another French division arrives from the southwest. |

The newcomers are faced by a mass of Russian cavalry, and for a short time there is a stand-off. |

A bird's-eye-view of the action in the west. |

Cossacks occupy the far right flank of the western-most Russian positions. |

A turn later, the French are carefully approaching the center of the Russian position. |

Russian cavalry and a horse battery drop back, keeping the second French division at a respectable distance. |

The first-arrived French division sends infantry into the central woods. They are reinforced with a sapper unit, and are ominously close to the large redoubt. |

The second French division brings up infantry to secure the front, and begins to move the artillery forward. |

Sunlight flashes from the metal dome of the church spire outside Eylau. |

A third French division (top) arrives from the southeast. The Russians already have some cannon and cavalry to oppose this move, but the French are strong. |

Ker-plooey! Several Imperial infantry brigades burst from the trees and scramble over the walls of the large redoubt. Russian cannon fire is not withering, fortunately for the attackers. |

The Russian defenders are driven from the redoubt, but the Tsar's men counter-attack with two large regular brigades. |

After a bloody struggle, alas, the redoubt is still in French hands. Russian cavalry (top) prepare to charge the defenders before they are fully protected in the earthworks. |

The end of this phase of the battle sees the third-arrived French division gathering infantry strength to attack the central defenses at Eylau. Long-range artillery potshots have caused a few headaches on both sides (note white disorder caps), but no major action has resulted. |

If your camera takes 10 successive shots on custom timer setting, you'll be likely to get at least one acceptable image. (You should have seen the other nine.) Rest easy, warriors, this battle will be fought another day! |
