Based on the historical battle, our scenario pits Eastern Army against Western Army for control of Gifu Castle and the surrounding hills. Have a look at the photos to see how it turned out.

The game was fought by the Gourmet Wargaming Club with 25mm figures, using our Samurai Furi ruleset (based on Fire and Fury and Age of Eagles) in the Santa Rosa Prefecture.

We begin our very civilized fracas with delicious snacks.

A view of the battlefield from the southwest. Gifu Castle has a black roof; the red building is a monastery. Forward elements of the Eastern Army are deployed from east to west.

Opening moves. Little men are on the table.

Western Army elements attack from the east.

Eastern Army Yumi (bowmen) engage probing enemy cavalry.

Another column of Western Army moves in from the center south.

Eastern Army defenders hold woods and earthen barricades in front of Gifu Castle.

More Western Army forces converge from the southwest towards the monastery.

And another column attacks from the west. Note the peasant militia defending behind earthen fortifications (top right).

Defending cavalry and Ashigaru arquebusiers hold ground to the east of the castle.

Our chef also wears the hat of photo-journalist.

Eastern Army forces enter the battlefield and head south to deal with the attack.

Gifu Castle and more defenders.

A short time later, the battle for the monastery is in high gear. The attackers are hindered by the narrow mountain roads, but they hope to overcome this problem with numbers.

Western Army Ashigaru and Samurai storm the monastery.

A vicious fight is brewing in the center, at the earthen barricades.

Two groups of cavalry charge defenders in a woodline, hoping to break the center defenses.

Western Army forces attack from the southeast, intending to envelope and outflank the defenders in front.

Opposing cavalry clash in the east.

The monastery has fallen to the attackers, but the earthen fortifications are slowing progress. Defending units are massing in front of the castle.

Eastern Army defenders (right) grow in numbers and hold off the forward-most enemy cavalry.

Western Army Ashigaru and Samurai put more pressure in the center. More and more defenders rush to the front. The barricades still hold here.

A single unit of Ashigaru (top center) stubbornly defends the hills to the east of the center barricades. Note the attacking cavalry thrown back in the foreground.

Forces mass on both sides in the east.

A small war is waged at the east edge of the battlefield, neither side having the advantage.

Our chef displays marinated meat moments before she carries it to the grill.

Savory smoke fills the valleys around Gifu Castle. Lunch is upon us!

We gather at the table and begin with miso soup.

Then on to the main course!

Delicious, fresh flavors with Japanese flair.

Our regular dessert chef--this time a player as well as food specialist--provides a sweet end.

Back to the murder and mayhem! The Western Army's left flank clears the forward defenses (right) and runs into more trouble.

The attack continues, the Eastern Army right flank slowly giving ground to the west of Gifu Castle.

The monastery is counter-attacked, but Western Army units swarm the enemy.

The defenders are barely holding on in the center of the battlefield. One of many critical delays that will cost the attackers.

Western Army's right flank is making some small gains. But a breakthrough is a long way away.

Western Army's extreme right flank is still involved in a stand-off. Gifu Castle is well-defended; Eastern Army is victorious today!

The Japanese wrecking crew in all their finery. The year 1600 will never be the same again.
